Manual conversion help please!

Post by R2D2 on Wed Jul 10, 2013 8:22 pm

Hey guys, wondering if I could get some help I got my mx83 less than a month ago and have purchased a 1986 mk3 supra donor car and was planning to swap the w58 over, HOWEVER since tc.net went down I have been having trouble finding a detailed write up of what has to be done (I apologize, IM not quite mechanic savvy). I have only found what parts are needed, which I was able to find on toyotanation, and jzxproject.

If anyone is willing to send me some clear instructions, it would be greatly appreciated!!!

It's pretty much bolt-on if you have all the parts. I'm not sure what you're asking for, specifically.

Well just go crazy with pulling the automatic, you can't really fuck anything up and it more or less garbage anyway. Than take it slow pulling the manual trans and put it back in the cressida the same way. You will need a brake pedal from a mk2 supra though.

Is there any wiring required?? All I'm understanding is that you just bolt everything in

You have to bypass the neutral safety switch, and you have to figure out the reverse lights wiring but that's it, unless you care about retaining cruise control.

Just find a wiring diagram/pinout for the automatic transmission and jump the connectors to trick your computer into thinking its in 'Park' or if you so desire wire it into the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal but I dunno why you would bother with that. And than do the same with the reverse light but instead of jumping them wire them into the reverse sensor on the 5 speed.

Lets see if I can remember.  out of the MkIII you will need, pedals(brake and clutch) transmission, flywheel and the front half of the driveshaft.  You can use the clutch from the donor car if it looks decent, but a new stock clutch shouldn't run you much.

Step one, yank out old nasty automatic transmission.  You can either get the car up and drop the transmission or pull the engine and transmission as a whole.  I have only done it with an X7, so I can't comment on the X8, but it was easier for me to pull the engine and transmission as a whole.
If you pull the engine and trans together, leave the power steering pump and the AC compressor in the car.  You can use wire and tie them up out of the way.  Also, remove the entire driveshaft(trust me, easier this way)
Unbolt and toss the old auto in the trash.  Bolt on the new flywheel and clutch kit.  Bolt the transmission on.
Now would be a decent time to put in your pedals and master cylinder.  For a master, some use the master out of the MkIII, but I have heard that the master out of a 90-99 celica is the one to use.  The later FWD celica master(94 and up) will have the offset reservoir that is easier to fill.  For the pedal, it all depends on which master you chose.  If you use the celica master, you need a pedal without bolts.  If your pedal has bolts, use the 1990 something  4 runner master(part number 31410-22261) and an IS300 remote reservoir.  There is also talk that the pedal and master from an AE95 corolla sedan will work, but again, you would need to use the IS300 remote reservoir.  If you use the MA70 master and pedal, you will have to drill some holes and do some fabrication, but having not done an X8 chassis, I can not comment on specifics
So, you have your pedals and master in.  Slide the engine and tranny back in place, reconnect everything and bolt it all back down.  Now, grab your two driveshafts... you did keep the MA70 driveshaft like I said right?  Unbolt the front half of both driveshafts and swap them.  Put the driveshaft back in and bolt it in place.
Remove car from blocks and rock your new baller status!
