i have an 86 MX72 wagon that i would like to upgrade to an LSD. any good solutions out there?

mine is the E292 7.1" diff. from what i can tell theres not much i can do with it other than scrap it.

it looks like the easiest swap would be First generation CelicaSupra rear end with disc brakes and a 7.5" ring. i was planning on doing that until i realized how much they are selling for. if this is going to end up costing an arm and a leg i am going to get one that holds more power.

any Suggestions? i might do an Air-Locker if i have to but id rather go LSD.

Just weld it up it really not that bad. But you can use the 1gen supra rear end and you would get disk brakes.

i am not going to weld it. i am not building a "Drift car"

i considered the axle from the 1st gen supra but i am getting quotes from $500 to $800. i dont want to pay that much for a diff with a ring that only supports ~350hp Ish...

that much cashola and i think im going to lean towards something bigger. or an ARB locker in the axle that i have.

I'm in the same boat as you brother I gotta figure out a rear end for my wagon. But I'm not to worried about it right now

if i can find a CHEAP MK-1 rear end id like to take that route but i think i will be hunting for quite a wile.

if i can find a steal on one il stuff a trutrack in it and be done. otherwise, probably going dayna60.

See I am doing 5 lug swap all the way around as well as big brake kit, (thanks again turboblack2door) so I didn't want drums, and I wanted accessible parts. Being in the northeast I have seen 1 mk1 in my LIFETIME in person, and its a friends, original owner car, that's it. Have been to yards across the state haven't seen one, zero.

so I was gunna go 79-86 2wd pickup rear end and make a jig and weld up the spring hangers and pan hard, but then I thought, sure now I'm 5lug as well... But drums? So I researched what stock parts I could use to make this all work, I don't have it handy so I may be wrong but mk3 baking plates, jz80 calipers, mk3 brackets jz80hub and ae86 cables... Then prices it out....and this is still an inch wider so i would have to cut it down to tuck or get different rims.

so I thought how much would it be to cut an mustang gt 8.8? Everything is available, big brake kits (cheap even compared to just buying stock brakes at the dealership!) the 8.8 has posi, has good sized discs already, has 5x114.3, but will I have to buy new axles or can they be resplined?

I can make it exactly the same size as stock, or even a little smaller for a couple hundred bucks. So could really get some tuck in there. So i talked to the machine shop and they said they would jig it up make it have the stock mounts ,(i strongly suggest changing the spring perchs on the diff to a 5.5 rather than stock) if i bring the the old diff for another 100, done. can get whatever gears my heart desires, and going through as many diffs as I have with my rock crawler, when it comes to diffs, my strokker 22r has killed 4 4cyl rear ends, hate to get spunky with my 5m

so my money is going into a 8.8, big as hell under there, but there's room and its by far the cheapest route in the long run. I can get a complete with brakes at my local yard for $46. $300-500 on finished product... Yeah.

Will be starting very soon, am remodeling my house and wife says that's top priority. Have been keeping my eyes out going to the yard each week looking for the rear housing, but hasn't been any lately, was going to go check again today but it freaking snowed again lol I'm shooting to start it all after "40s in a bag" VAG show in early may. Should be warm enough by then that my hands work lol sucks getting old

Right on I need a better rear end since I'm putting a 2j in my wagon. Stock should be good till I na-t it. I'm stoked on your biuld ill be waiting for the start in may.

I was talking to my buddie and he was say the 8.8 will be way to quick in the gearing and to just go 9in. What do you think

R&p's are easily changeable, both have boat loads of aftermarket options, either way they are cheap for both. A 3.73 will dog off the line a bit but gain a few mpg on the highway (and top speed) stock is 4.10, so its not a huge difference, just have to adjust for speed cuz the Speedo will be off a few.
I would prolly jump to a 4.56 anyways though.

I love launch. Lol

I have 5.29s in my crawler, gearing is crucial. Talk to anyone with a x8 that went from stock to the mk3 4.30 gears and all they say is how much it perked up the cars take off

i got my hands on an 81 Supra parts car. has an F302 (7.5" 3.73 open diff)

so now all i gotta do is drop in a trutrack and install the axle / disk brakes!

Instead of Mustang diffs, look for the Explorer, same diff and if you are lucky, you can find one with an LSD. Buddy of mine did this for his Camaro drag car. By doing some parts swapping in the yard, he walked out with discs, LSD 8.8 rear for 65$ He shortened the axle tubes and went with Strange axles for the new length(125$) All in for a drag car diff for under 250$ after new bearings and such.

i went and bought an entire 81 MK-I supra for $450

got me a 7.5" rear with disc brakes and a 3.73 R&P! Woot Woot!!!!

still have the rest of the car to part-out and recoup some of my cashmonies. now i need to snag a trutrack.
