MX72 Rear End Solutions Think Tank

Ok I am doing some research on diff/suspension options to those of us with Wagons and I'd like to use this thread to discuss possibilities with you guys.

Diff:
Our axle code is F292. F = 7.5" ring gear, 29 = 4.10 ratio, 2 = 2 pinion open diff.
I was looking around online at Truck stuff with 7.5" diffs and I found this link

Specifically I was eyeing the Detroit Eaton Torsen LSD's. I'm not sure what size axles us Cressida guys use, but it could possibly be a solution?

Suspension:
It is my understanding that for suspension we can use the same stuff early Celica guys use. This is what was recommended to me:

And the tried and true Camaro rear shocks should be fine as a short stroke setup.

Also I'm being told that the LSD from an MA60 (the internals, not the actual housing obviously) should bolt in, since their diff code is F283 it should fit. Anybody tried this?

More diff info. This is all according to the info I have access to (I work in the Parts Dept at a Toyota dealership). I have not looked at my plate, I'll do that this evening.
X73 LSD = F303 (7.5" ring gear, 3.727 ratio, 2 pinion LSD)
X73 open = F302 (7.5" ring gear, 3.727 ratio, 2 pinion open)
X72 = F292 (7.5" ring gear, 4.1 ratio, 2 pinion open)
A60 open = F302 (7.5" ring gear, 3.727 ratio, 2 pinion open)
A60 LSD = EITHER:
F303 (8/81-8/84, 7.5" ring gear, 3.727 ratio, 2 pinion LSD)
F283 (8/83-12/85, 7.5" ring gear, 2 pinion LSD)

Still not sure if any of these will be plug and play, but I'll give it a shot and post back.

Yep. Forgot to update this thread. Looks like the final solution is: there isn't one. Bwomp bwomp bwoooooomp

Well, there are many final solutions, but they all involve fabrication and welding. The 1st gen Supra diffs work great, but are expensive. You can get a Toyota truck diff, either in 7.5(F) or 8.0(G) and pre-85(sept 84 or older). You can have the axle tubes shortened(not really needed as they are only about an inch wider) and the mounts welded on. Then new axles and you are back in business. You can also try the Ford 8.8 rear end as well. These were usually found under Fox Body Mustangs and will have the benefit of disc brakes as well. Again though, you may need to shorten the tubes, get new axles and of course have the mounts welded on. Most of these axles will also mean new driveshafts as the diffs are definitely longer than the stock MX72

pretty much all you can do to the E series diff is weld it.

Is the Mk1 Celica-Supra rear end a completely bolt-in affair? I've heard tales that it is, I just want to be sure.

Yes, even down to the disc breaks. it is a direct PnP bolt on swap. however, it is a rather expensive axle because lots of people want them.

if your not going to run big power than its a great way to go. if you are going to run big power than you will need some fabrication to put in a bigger one.

Yeah I'm picking one up this weekend, I just wanted to make sure everything will work, especially with my driveshaft (custom 1 piece).

The IS200 Torsen is also an option, and cost less than the Eaton.
But if I were to ever do an X7, I would either just run down one of these X7 8" LSDs, since all 8" gear sets (a large selection available), and aftermarket LSDs will fit:



Or.....
Just buy an 8" out of the likes of a MkIII Supra, or IS300, and modify the subframe pieces to mount it.
