mx73 engine swap 2jzgte or 1uz
I will he getting an 86 cressida this week that will be my project car for the winter, its an automatic right now and will be my daily driver once its completed
How hard will be either of this swaps and will I be able to keep my automatic transmission with this engines or will I have to use the transmission that comes with either engine from the factory?
What swap do you guys recommend and why? If I go with a manual transmission will a w58 be a good option?
I have looked online at a couple of places that import engines and it looks like its a lot cheaper to buy an an engine with an automatic transmission than one with a manual.
Since it will be my daily driver I dont want to go crazy so either engine will remain mostly stock

Your A43 won't last 5 minutes behind a NA 2JZ much less a turbo or 1UZ. Similarly you won't find a bellhousing to fit it either so you won't be able to try.
W58 is an ok choice. stock power levels it'll be OK but any increase in power or ham-handed driving will toast it quick with either the 2JZGTE or 1UZFE. Better option if you're planning on hard driving or mower power would be an R154 (hard to find for JZ, custom adapter for UZ) or supra V160/161 6 speed ($$$$$$$$$$)

What about the automatic that comes with either engine?

Would be a good choice, as long as you have all the electronics from the doner car.

Will an auto transmission work fine or do you guys recommend going manual? Im leaning more towards the 1uz just bacause of availability, I can get a complete running donor car for less than $1000 the only thing I will need to get is the manual transmission convertion parts if I decide to go manual

the factory auto will be easier as you will have one with the engine. you would need to make a new driveshaft and you will also have to come up with a solution to make your speedometer work. the newer lexus autos have an electronic output for the speedometer.
i was planning on going Auto myself, but lucked out and got an awesome deal on a complete JZ-W58 swap so i jumped on it.

If I go with a w58, will I need a new driveshaft?

Re: mx73 engine swap 2jzgte or 1uz
most roads lead to needing a new driveshaft. ultimately it depends on the mounting position of what engine you choose and what parts you already have.
if your car is currently an auto, your current front half wont be much help to you.

With an '86 Cressida, the only option not needing a new driveshaft is using your existing transmission (bad idea-A43 won't last 5 mins behind a JZ or UZ) or a MA60 or MX73 W58...and the length might not be right for the 1UZ depending on where the adapter puts it.

The factory drive shaft pieces are garbage. Every one I have had in my possession has been unserviceable except 1 of the 2, mk3 supra driveshaft. Do yourself a favour and put a 1 piece in. Also before I had figured this out I had gone to lordco to get the carrier bearing and was told that the part was unavailable now, I waisted my money on the last one the had. I don't know if you can still get them from toyota or whatever other parts stores you guys have over there or in the US or wherever.

Explain 'for cheap'.
Why is it cheap ?
Was the car wrecked ?
Or did someone pull it because it was turning into a pain in the butt ?

Re: mx73 engine swap 2jzgte or 1uz
So the cressida turned out to be an 87 so it has the A340E transmission wich is also used on other cars like
1986-1998 Toyota Supra non-turbo
1987-1998 Toyota Supra turbo
1992-2000 Lexus SC 300 3.0L I6
1992-1999 Lexus SC 400 4.0L V8
1999-2003 Crown Athlete V (1JZ-GTE)
1994-2000 Toyota Soarer 3.0L I6 (2JZ-GE)
1995-1997 Lexus LS 400 4.0L V8
1991-2000 toyota soarer 1jz gte
so will I be able to use my stock auto transmission with a 1jzgte, 2jzgte or 1uz?

Re: mx73 engine swap 2jzgte or 1uz
No.........
The bell housing, torque converter, & input shaft are different.
Just buy an engine with a trans, ECU, and harness, or your engine swap will turn into a 3 year nightmare.
